Citizens confront nuisance Metro riders
A GROUP of Shanghai residents fed up with nuisances on the Metro found seven people begging or distributing fliers and demanded that they get off the trains.
The unofficial team of two women and five men volunteers found the two beggars and five flier distributors on Line 10 trains within two hours on Sunday. After the people got off, the group notified Metro police or security guards so they could be removed, Oriental Morning Post reported.
Aggressive panhandlers, flier distributors and others who litter or urinate in public or otherwise act in an uncultivated people have drawn complaints from commuters on the city’s subway system.
Though the team’s efforts were praised by many netizens, police suggested residents first call police before acting because most members of the public aren’t experts on self-protection or evidence preservation.
Also, lawyers said the offenders violated security management rules rather than criminal laws. They said residents cannot force the offenders to leave without risking accusations of restricting others’ freedom.
