Citizens’ input sought on boat regulations

CITY government officials are seeking public opinion on a draft regulation for passenger boats taking up to 12 people that gives their operators the right to reject drunken passengers.
The draft, published on the government’s official website over the weekend, also demands operators suspend the service if there is bad weather that could significantly affect passenger safety. Refusing to do so could lead to fines from 2,000 to 5,000 yuan (US$290 to US$725).
This will be the city’s first regulation for such boats, which mainly operate in tourist water towns such as Zhujiajiao or as tourist boats on rivers and lakes such as Suzhou Creek and Dishui Lake.
Both motor and non-motor boats are covered by the regulation. All passenger boats should be registered with the government, along with the qualifications of the crew.
