City dumplings are declared safe
A SHANGHAI-BASED frozen food manufacturer has assured consumers that its products sold in the city are safe after one of its factories in north China's Tianjin City recalled a batch of tangyuan dumplings made for the Lantern Festival, which fell yesterday.
Beijing authorities discovered a substandard sample during tests recently. Longfong Food Co has dispatched staff to explain the situation to customers, retailers and distributors in Shanghai, said Meng Qingjiang of Longfong's marketing department.
Meng said all Longfong products sold in Shanghai were produced at its factory in neighboring Zhejiang Province. All the products passed quality tests, Meng added.
A batch of "Ningbo Tangyuan" dumplings made by Longfong had 20 percent more hydrogen peroxide than the national standard. The chemical is commonly used in food processing but an excess amount could lead to stomach upsets, vomiting or diarrhea.
