City house burglar gets 14 years' jail

THE Jing'an District People's Court yesterday sentenced a burglar to 14 years in prison for stealing cash and properties worth more than 50,000 yuan (US$7,975) from 18 families.

The convict, named Duan Fei, only admitted to four of the thefts in which his face was captured by surveillance cameras.

Prosecutors said Duan sneaked into people's homes by climbing through the window and took away any valuables he could get his hands on while the victims were asleep.

The court heard Duan broke into four households in a residential complex on Langao Road W. on February 8 and stole laptops, cellphones, liquor and flash sticks and cash. He used the same means to rob from 14 other families in Zhabei and Jing'an districts within a month, prosecutors alleged.

The court imposed a heavy sentence on Duan due to the fact that he was jailed twice for theft earlier and had committed the crimes only a few months after being released last November.
