City looks for help on sport shows

SHANGHAI is encouraging businesses and social organizations to get involved in hosting the city’s 180 national and international sports events this year.

The Shanghai Sports Bureau said more than 180 national and international competitions, covering almost 40 sports, are scheduled for the city this year — 15 percent more than last year.

These include the Formula 1 grand prix (April 7-9), the equestrian Global Champions Tour (April 28-30), the ATP 1000 tennis Shanghai Masters (October 7-15) and the Shanghai International Marathon (November 12).

The city government yesterday launched a portal for local and international companies and organizations to promote their activities and seek sponsorship.

“The purpose is to build Shanghai’s sports industry into a more market-oriented one, and get more social forces involved while providing better experiences for sports followers,” said Sun Weimin, deputy chief of Shanghai Sports Bureau.

Organizers will target running, cycling and water sports first.

New competitions this year include the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the Tough Mudder obstacle race and the English Premier League Asian Cup.
