City newspaper chalks up 80 years of excellence
THE daily newspaper with the biggest circulation in Shanghai celebrated its 80th anniversary yesterday.
Xinmin Evening News, formerly known as Xinmin Po, first hit the streets on September 9, 1929.
As a publication noted for its plain language style, it has more than 1.1 million daily readers nationwide and overseas.
Congratulations were received from Vice President Xi Jinping and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive Donald Tsang.
As a reader of the newspaper, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said it was not only a record of history but also an inheritance of the city spirit.
Wang Zhongwei, director of the Communist Party of China Shanghai Committee's publicity department, Miao Guoqin, Party secretary of Wenhui Xinmin United Press Group, and Chen Baoping, editor-in-chief of Xinmin Evening News, all delivered speeches.
