City plans makeover for 2 rare shikumen

THE city government will renovate and preserve two rare shikumen neighborhoods near downtown Nanjing Road and has invited designers to submit proposals for the projects.

The stone-gate buildings in Aimin Lane and 500 Tianjin Road Lane in the city’s most popular commercial zone are among the few small-block style shikumen neighborhoods remaining, the Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administration said yesterday.

They have been listed as shikumen neighborhoods that “should be rescued and protected urgently,” the administration said.

The neighborhoods, which are about 1 kilometer from People’s Square and the Bund, are densely occupied by senior citizens and migrant families.

The buildings’ infrastructure and living environment needs to be significantly improved, the administration said.

Many illegal structures have been set up in both neighborhoods, including some that block entrances.

Clothes are hung across public areas and streets to dry, many motorcycles and bicycles are disorderly parked and private vehicles have nowhere to park.

In the 500 Tianjin Road Lane neighborhood, residents complain of smoke from restaurants and shops along the street.

Exercise facilities are clogged with piles of goods and some residents have even planted vegetables in the public garden.

Chinese and foreign designers are being invited to redesign the neighborhoods, including entrances and public areas and come up with innovative ways to fit many vehicles into the limited space.

They will be asked to incorporate public seats, exercise facilities, jogging tracks, garbage storage sheds and “useful and beautiful” drying racks.

The administration is encouraging designers to use modern technology such as solar-powered lighting in the historic neighborhoods.

An expert panel will choose the two winners, who will each receive 10,000 yuan (US$1,450).

The planning authority will further develop the proposals and carry out the work later this year.

Those submitting designs for the makeovers should contact the authority with their details and ideas at walking_sh@sdpcus.com before February 3.
