City smites smut sites on mobile phones
SHANGHAI has shut down almost 1,900 Websites containing pornographic and improper content accessible via mobile phones so far this year, the city's telecommunications authorities said yesterday.
The porn photos and videos, "a cancer on the wireless Internet," were widely spread among about 18 million Shanghai mobile-phone users, who were charged for clicking and watching the content on the Websites, according to the Shanghai Communications Administration.
During the campaign against porn, the city also closed 2,000 unregistered Websites.
Shanghai branches of China Mobile and China Telecom canceled 69 contracts of companies providing obscene content.
"It's a nightmare to visit Websites filled with naked photos and sex video," said Rae Huang, a mother of a 13-year-old boy. "I am worried for my son."
Consumers sometimes received more than 10 short messages each day asking them to visit such Websites.
Most of the Websites were based on servers outside the Chinese mainland.
The messages were sent to millions of people randomly each day through special software tools.
China Mobile has shut 626 sites hosting obscene content nationwide, including six at the company's own data centers.
