City unveils festival parade floats
A record 25 floats will tour the city after making their debut in a parade on Huaihai Road, which will kick off the Shanghai Tourism Festival, on September 10, officials said yesterday.
The Shanghai Disney Resort’s float will lead the parade, ahead of those from the cities of Suzhou, Nanjing and Taipei, according to the Shanghai Tourism Administration, which unveiled the float designs yesterday. These will be followed by floats from the provinces of Shanxi and Henan, and Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang Uygur autonomous regions.
The Disney float will celebrate the resort’s recent grand opening and promote its attractions and entertainment. The centerpiece of the float is a glittering golden replica of the resort’s Enchanted Storybook Castle — the largest castle in any Disney park or resort around the world.
The float representing Inner Mongolia will feature grass meadowlands, horses, sheep and yurts, while the float from Lianyungang city in Jiangsu Province will feature monkeys and the Huaguo Mountains because the city is the hometown of the Monkey King, the hero from the classic novel “Journey to the West.”
The float from Shanxi Province pays tribute to its traditional Jin architecture, highlighting its ancient culture, while the Xinjiang float will celebrate its fruit-growing tradition.
After the parade, the floats will travel along Sichuan Road N. in Hongkou District, Xingyi Road in Changning District and stop at Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall and Yuyao Road.
People have a chance to win overseas trips for two by voting for their favorite floats.
Between September 10 and 13, 60 scenic spots will offer half-price discounts.
The Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower and Shanghai Ocean Aquarium will be the most crowded attractions during the festival, which ends on October 6, while Xinchang Water Town, Zhoupu Flower Sea, and Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center will be some of the least crowded, according to travel agencies.
