City upgrades TV network to digital
ABOUT 2.5 million households in downtown Shanghai will be able to enjoy high definition quality TV programs from 2011 when the city upgrades its TV network from analog to digital signals.
Residents will then be able to see the current 61 TV channels and 15 new channels as well as hear 20 radio channels, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
Shanghai's close circuit TV network will distribute two free digital set-top boxes to each household for them to see programs on both on the digital network and analog during the changeover period.
The analog TV network will be shut in 2015 after the upgrade expands to all Shanghai areas. The upgrade is in line with a national scheme to switch to digital programming.
