City鈥檚 largest charity event to use Internet to raise transparency
THE city’s largest annual charity event will hold a month-long drive online for the first time in order to increase the transparency of donations, organizers said today.
The Shanghai Charity Foundation’s “True Love Under the Blue Sky” event will collect online donations from December 12 to January 12. The money goes to a broad range of programs helping poor families and seniors, orphans and others in need.
“It is the first time we have used online donations to raise funds, which is more transparent and efficient as people can track the name of donors, donation amounts and donation projects,” said Fang Guoping, executive vice chairman and secretary-general of the foundation.
While the foundation is not making the change due to any problem — it has not been involved in scandals — some national charities have seen donations fall due to accusations of mismanagement.
The online donation campaign is expected to attract more than 10,000 donors. Also, 30-plus websites including eastday.com and ifeng.com will collect donations. All donations will be transferred to the foundation’s website for distribution.
Last year’s campaign raised 233.4 million yuan (US$38.3 million). The annual charity event began in 1994.
A donation drive also will be held on streets across the city, which is a traditional fundraising method for the event, which attracts tens of thousands of people to help those less fortunate each year.
Some expats and foreign-funded companies also participate in the charity event, according to the foundation. The number of foreign-funded companies and expats participating have both been on the rise.
