Clip of sexual assault on street posted online

POLICE are investigating a video clip that appears to show a man sexually assaulting a half-naked young woman as she lies semi-conscious on a sidewalk in the city's Tianlin area.
The footage, which has been viewed widely online, shows a crowd of passersby watching the scene without attempting to help the woman.
In the 34-second clip, a man wearing suit can be seen crouching beside the woman at Tianlin Road, Xuhui District. She appears to be drunk or have fainted, and her blouse is pulled up around her chest.
In front of passersby, the man kisses her lips and licks her breast, while the woman can be seen waving her hands slightly, trying to stop him.
Some 10 people, including security guards and children, pass by. Some stop and watch, joking and cheering, but none try to stop the man.
The video ends with someone shouting, "Here comes the police."
Police said they are looking into the case and suspect the man knows the woman.
The clip was posted online by "vpdb," who said the incident occurred on Sunday.
Although it has been deleted on many major video websites, screenshots are still being spread across weibo.com and popular online forums such as Tianya.cn.
The pictures have stirred debate among web users with many criticizing the passersby for not intervening.
"The man had the time and inclination to video the whole scene, but why didn't he report it the police immediately or stop it himself?" asked web user "Feihong 007."
But netizen "flowl" said on his blog on weibo.com that it was understandable for people not to help as they didn't know the circumstances and didn't want to get involved in other troubles.
