Collapse suspects detained

NINE suspects involved in the collapse of a building in Songjiang District have been placed in criminal detention and a 10th will remain free on bond, the district government said yesterday.
The 10 under coercive measures are the landlord, the leaseholder and renovation workers, according to Shanghai Television Station.
The three-story building collapsed on Monday afternoon, injuring a woman and her son.
According to the local authority’s preliminary investigation, the collapse was caused by unqualified workers illegally knocking down load-bearing walls while doing renovation work on the residential complex.
