Colleagues recall dead firemen fondly
Colleagues of the two firemen who died after tackling a factory blaze in Shanghai on Tuesday recalled their days in the fire brigade and willingness to help others.
Sun Luoluo, 19, and Lu Chen, 23, died after putting out a fire at the Shanghai Huanzhen Packaging Material Factory on Minke Road in Baoshan District.
They were buried in debris when a building collapsed.
“Sun handed me a bottle of water, unscrewed the cap and told me to take a rest. Then he ran into the building first,” recalled Yuan Chaochao, one of the four firefighters who were clearing up in the building after the fire had been doused.
Yuan and Zhang Jifu were only slightly hurt. The causes of the fire and the collapse are still under investigation.
The two who died joined the Luodian Fire Brigade in December 2012.
Sun, from Wuhan in Hubei Province, was the youngest member. He had come first in an overall evaluation of new recruits, said Li Huaimin, a brigade instructor, and had been assigned to a special team tackling the most important and urgent tasks.
Lu, from Chongming County, was always ready to help others, his colleagues said.
