Concert hall for Baoshan

BAOSHAN District will build a landmark concert hall in north Shanghai to cover the shortage of major cultural venues in the area, the district government said.

Shanghai Changtan Concert Hall, which is scheduled to be built next year on a former container dock along the Yangtze River, will host concerts and musical events.

With a total investment of about 500 million yuan (US$72 million), the concert hall has been nicknamed “Crystal,” due to its shape and transparent appearance.

It will have 772 seats at ground level and 258 overhead, said Gao Jianqiang, the official in charge of the concert project. The 260-square-meter stage would be able to accommodate a major symphony orchestra of more than 100 musicians, Gao said.

The stage would also be equipped with an elevating orchestra platform.

Light and music shows would be held on the outside of the building during festivals and major musical events.

The northern district, renowned for its container ports and iron and steel industries, has long lacked cultural venues, especially large theaters. Baoshan Party Secretary Wang Hong has said that residents complained they had to go downtown to watch dramas or attend concerts.

“The new concert hall will cover the shortage and make Baoshan a cultural highland of Shanghai,” the district government said at the weekend. The concert hall will be a landmark for the under-construction Changtan area, which is being transformed from the Changtan dock formerly operated by Shanghai International Port Group.

The revamped site spans a square kilometer.
