Convicted over ‘fake cat food’
ALIBABA’S popular retail site Taobao has won compensation of 120,000 yuan (US$17,741) in the country’s first lawsuit filed by an online shopping platform against trade in counterfeit goods.
The vendor, surnamed Yao, started selling pet food, including the popular Mars Inc’s Royal Canin cat food via Taobao in January, 2015, the Fengxian District People’s Court heard.
Mars and Taobao bought samples from Yao’s store and tests showed they were fake.
Yao mixed Royal Canin cat food with cheaper brands and made about 5.88 million yuan (US$870,000). Yao was accused of “breaking Taobao’s rules and damaging its reputation.”
