Cost of cable TV to rise
CITY residents face a 77 percent rise in their monthly cable TV bills when Shanghai transmissions switch from analog to digital on January 1, 2011.
The new fee will be 23 yuan (US$3.37) per month for each household, set after a public hearing last month.
Each of the downtown's 2.5 million households will receive two free set-top boxes with two ports to enjoy digital broadcasting.
Discounts will be offered to poor people, hospitals, schools and other institutions.
A public hearing was held on November 23 by the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission to call for public opinion on the price adjustment.
