Cost of cable TV to rise

CITY residents face a 77 percent rise in their monthly cable TV bills when Shanghai transmissions switch from analog to digital on January 1, 2011.

The new fee will be 23 yuan (US$3.37) per month for each household, set after a public hearing last month.

Each of the downtown's 2.5 million households will receive two free set-top boxes with two ports to enjoy digital broadcasting.

Discounts will be offered to poor people, hospitals, schools and other institutions.

A public hearing was held on November 23 by the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission to call for public opinion on the price adjustment.
