Couple guilty of selling expired medications

A couple from Anhui Province was sentenced to prison for recycling expired medicines and selling them for profit, Baoshan District People's Court said today.

Prosecutors said the couple, surnamed Sun and Li, bought a large quantity of out-of-date drugs and medicines 30 to 40 percent below the original prices from residents and recycle stations since March 2010.

They then purchased fake drug boxes and instructions, repackaged the medicines with new batch numbers and production dates and sold them to Henan Province.

The court heard Li and Sun earned more than 200,000 yuan (US$31,387) from the scheme. Police seized a variety of cold, flu and cancer medications worth an estimated 332,507 yuan from their residence in Dachang Town, Baoshan District.

Sun was sentenced to 2 years for masterminding the scheme while his wife was handed a one-year jail term with a one-year reprieve.
