Court hears man robbed a store to anger mom

A YOUNG man who robbed a convenience store said he did it because he wanted to be taken into custody for several days to upset his mother, Hongkou District People's Court heard yesterday.

Prosecutors said the 24-year-old suspect, surnamed Zhang, robbed a Family Mart convenience store on Tongyan Road on November 26. He took the money from the cash register and was stopped by the shop assistant, the court heard. He then left the store and came back with a stick. He smashed the cash register with the stick and fled with 707 yuan (US$114), prosecutors said.

Zhang was caught by the shop assistant and nearby residents the same day, the court heard.

Zhang said he didn't know the robbery would lead to a trial.

"I didn't do it for the money," he told the court. "I just wanted to be detained for several days."

Zhang's stepfather told Shanghai Daily that the young man had argued with his mother the night before the robbery. He smashed the television and computer during the argument and left home.

The court didn't announce a verdict yesterday.
