Court spurns driver’s plea over 5-year jail sentence

AN appeal by a man against his five-year jail sentence for driving on the wrong side of the road and causing injuries to police personnel has been rejected by the Shanghai Intermediate People’s Court.

The man, surnamed Liu, was found driving drunk in the wrong direction at the crossroad between Cao’an Road and Jiayi Road in suburban Jiading District at dawn on January 19. On being asked to stop by traffic police officer Wang, Liu accelerated and crashed into Wang, injuring him. Liu’s car later crashed into the back of a vehicle waiting at a crossroad, leading the car behind to collide with them.

Liu was captured by police at the scene and while being taken to the police station, he kicked officer Huang, who was driving the car, causing another car collision.

The court ruled that since Liu had already been caught drunk driving last year, his misdemeanor this time should be considered as a crime endangering public safety.
