Crackdown on illegal tricycles

SHANGHAI traffic police have seized more than 2,500 illegally motorized tricycles this month.
The tricycles, used to carry construction materials, kitchen waste, furniture and home appliances, are endangering traffic safety, police said, due to engines and batteries being added to the original non-motorized vehicles. Such additions often hamper braking performance.
At the crossroads of Gonghexin Road and Changzhong Road in Jing’an District, police stopped four such tricycles yesterday morning. Their owners were fined 50 yuan (US$7.30) for illegally motorizing the vehicles and another 50 yuan if they didn’t possess licenses to operate them.
One of the tricycle owners, a 62-year-old man surnamed Lu, said he bought his motorized tricycle for 4,700 yuan two years ago and has been making a living with it transporting construction waste from residential complexes to recyclers.
Lu said his tricycle, when fully loaded, is still not as fast as many e-bikes.
Shanghai government no longer issues registration plates to tricycles.
