Cream of children’s literature celebrated
BRAZILIAN illustrator and writer Roger Mello, and Chinese author Jin Bo were yesterday jointly named Best Author of the Year 2014 at the inaugural Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Awards in Shanghai.
“It’s a great honor for me to win a prize named after Chen Bochui, who made such a difference in China by giving children the best literature and the best art,” Mello told Shanghai Daily after the ceremony.
“When you give children the best, you give the best to your country,” he said.
“I’m a huge fan of Chinese history and Chinese cultural legacy. So it’s really amazing for me to be here.”
Mello was also presented with the 2014 Hans Christian Andersen for Illustration for his work on “A Feather,” which was written by China’s Cao Wenxuan.
Mello’s fellow laureate, Jin Bo, has been writing children’s literature since 1957. In that time, the now 79-year-old Beijinger, has won numerous literary prizes and in 1992 was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. His works include “The Small Tree on the Rooftop” and “Light the Little Orange Lamp.”
Also among yesterday’s prize winners were publishers Patricia Aldana from Canada and Hai Fei from China, who collected Special Contribution awards, while 13 other authors were also honored.
The Chen Bochui Children’s Literature Prize was established in 1981, but changed its name this year to the Chen Bochui International Children’s Literature Award. It is named after the famed Chinese writer who died in 1997 at the age of 91.
The annual awards ceremony, which also forms part of the China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair, recognizes the work of writers, artists and publishers from around the world.
