Crush death brings guilty plea

A TRUCK driver pled guilty yesterday to crushing a man to death when the victim tried to stop him from unlawfully dumping construction wastes.

Liu Jiating, a 27-year-old farmer from Anhui Province, was charged with murder by prosecutors because, they said, he clearly knew the danger in speeding up the truck when the victim was standing on the foot plate outside the door on the driver's side.

Prosecutors urged a sentence of more than 10 years.

On the evening of January 8, Liu drove a truck to carry construction wastes from a construction site on Dongfang Road to a dump site on Tanglu Road.

When he drove to the intersection of Longdong Avenue and Jinlin Road, Liu saw some workers clearing dumped construction wastes. He asked whether he could dump his truck's load there.

"I didn't hear quite clearly and I thought they agreed," Liu told Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court yesterday.

Liu drove on for some 80 meters and went on the sidewalk. Wang Weigang, the head of the workers, caught up with Liu quickly and stopped him. He also threatened to fine Liu. Liu sped up. Wang fell and was crushed by the 10-ton truck to death.

Liu didn't stop the truck until two co-workers of the victim called a taxi to catch up with him. He said he didn't feel any jolt though he saw the victim lying on the ground.
