Cupping therapist jailed after duped patient dies

A CUPPING therapist who conned a cancer patient out of 600,000 yuan (US$98,340) and hastened his death was jailed for 10 and a half years yesterday.

The unlicensed doctor, surnamed Zhu, a 48-year-old migrant from east China’s Jiangxi Province, persuaded his patient to stop taking medication, Jiading District People’s Court heard.

Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese medical treatment believed to mobilize blood flow to promote healing by placing cups on the skin and applying either heat or suction.

Prosecutors said Zhu was introduced to his victim, surnamed Wang, who had liver cancer, in December 2010.

Zhu promised Wang that he could cure the disease, provided he received a high fee and Wang stopped taking drugs he’d been prescribed.

At the beginning of 2011, Zhu carried out cupping on Wang several times at his clinic in Jiading District and later pronounced him cured.

The patient and his family paid Zhu a total of 600,000 yuan in fees.

Afterwards, Wang complained that his body was aching but Zhu dismissed this, insisting these pains had nothing to do with liver cancer.

But a hospital check revealed that Wang’s cancer was not cured, and he reported Zhu to police in August.

Wang died from liver cancer six month later.

Zhu was held by police on May 29 last year and 500,000 yuan retrieved.
