Customs finds 400,000 euros in traveler's suitcase

CUSTOMS officers found 400,000 euros (US$526,640) wrapped in tinfoil in a Chinese woman's luggage at Pudong International Airport when she entered the country from France, airport officials said today.

The limit of foreign currency that tourists can carry with them is US$5,000 if they haven't applied for a license from authorities allowing them to have more.

The traveler was clearing Customs when her luggage was flagged as abnormal and officers opened her case and found the money.

Pudong International Airport Customs had handled 197 cases of illegally smuggled currency by August 31 this year.

Customs said each inbound or outbound person can have a maximum of 20,000 yuan. If the cash is foreign currency, the traveler must get a license from designated foreign exchange banks when the amount falls in a range of US$5,000 to US$10,000. If the amount exceeds the range, a license from the administration of foreign exchange is necessary.
