Customs seize 249kg scales of pangolin

ABOUT 249 kilograms of pangolin scales were seized at Pudong International Airport, the largest ever seizure of animal products in the city, Shanghai Customs said yesterday.
The scales were brought in nine black suitcases on March 27. Alert customs officials spotted in the X-ray scanning machine.
A man and a woman were caught when they picked the suitcases from the luggage claim area. All the cases were filled with pangolin scales.
The two said they were paid to deliver the suitcases to a man surnamed Feng. Feng later told officials he was only helping his colleague surnamed Qiu in Nigeria to get the scales and deliver them to other people in China.
Ten days later, customs official seized another 25 kilograms of pangolin scales from another person, who also said he was working for Qiu.
Police are now doing further investigation about the crimes.
Pangolins are protected in China and cannot be killed or traded. But its scales have high medical value and could fetch 5,000 yuan (US$800) per kilogram.
