Demand grows for jobs in services

A 22-year-old final-year mold design and manufacturing undergraduate surnamed Chen told Shanghai Daily yesterday he is looking for job as a real estate agent in Shanghai.

“Many factory jobs in my field require several years of work experience, and I don’t want to stick with a low-end job because I can’t learn anything there,” he said.

Chen left his hometown in Anhui Province for Shanghai a few days ago.

His friend, surnamed Zhang, who is also from Anhui, gave up his studies in computer numerical control in the hope of becoming a salesman in Shanghai.

“My classmates who work as interns in factories often complain about the hardship, which made me think twice about looking for a job there,” said Zhang.

Many of his friends “want to work for something that’s challenging, but well-paid,” he said.

Some migrant workers are paid 3,000 yuan (US$460) as salespeople, and some working in factory jobs get 2,500 yuan.

Meanwhile, a human resources manager surnamed Zhu from mold manufacturer Jiayuan, which is based in Jiading District, said her company is finding it hard to recruit mold programmers and computer numerical control workers.

“We lost a few experienced workers last year, who told us that they would change their jobs or start their own businesses,” she said.

About 60 percent of the 4 million migrant workers in Shanghai who were covered by social insurance at the end of last year were under 30. About 70 percent of them had nine or fewer years of formal education, according to the Shanghai Office of Migrant Workers’ Affairs.

“Some of the service jobs, such as real estate agents, don’t require degrees or developed skills,” said Zhao Jiande, the office’s director.

Over 60 percent of the 164 million migrant workers in east China work in the manufacturing industry, according to a report released last year by the State Statistics Bureau.
