Diesel smugglers indicted. Leader is policeman

SHANGHAI prosecutors indicted eight people of smuggling 844 metric tons of fuel oil and evading 2.29 million yuan (US$474,300) of import tax.

The ring, led by a harbor police officer surnamed Fang, purchased diesel and other fuel oil from foreign ships anchored offshore near the mouth of the Yangtze River, stored the oil in a warehouse on land and sold it to ships on the Yangtze River from a barges.

The smuggling ring was busted last August when customs officials seized more than 844 metric tons of oil and five smuggling vessels near the mouth of the Yangtze River.

Custom officers detained 41 suspects and arrested 37 of them on criminal charges.

Prosecutors said the ring evaded 2.29 million yuan in import tax.
