Discharge from water plant in Xuhui turns river sky blue

A SMALL river in Xuhui District turned sky blue as well as a few other colors this week, prompting water authorities to tell a water plant to make corrections to how it handles wastewater.

The Changqiao Water Plant in Xuhui was found to be discharging wastewater of several different hues into a nearby river near Chunshen Harbor, which links the Dingpu and Huangpu rivers. However, tests found the water had no smell or toxicity, the Xuhui Water Authority announced yesterday.

The discoloration is from the process of purifying tap water that originates elsewhere and is harmless, officials said.

The river turned sky blue starting Monday, making it look seriously polluted, a resident surnamed Hu living nearby said.

The water also turned yellow and black sometimes, Hu said.

“The color looks weird and we residents are wondering whether the water quality of the water plant will be affected,” Hu said.

The Changqiao Water Plant on Shangzhong Road in Xuhui supplies water to the city’s downtown, but its intake is in the Qiangcaosha Reservoir on the Yangtze River, meaning the water quality is not affected by the river in Xuhui, an official with the water authority said.

“The water authority will ask the plant to launch an overhaul of its discharge system while it plans to dredge the river near the Chunshen Harbor soon, which should increase water flow and avoid discoloration,” he added.

The official said that while the wastewater has been emitted in several shades lately, the plant still could reach the standard for wastewater to be discharged into the river.

“The blue and green color comes from chlorine disinfectants used for the tap water and adds no pollution to the river,” the official said. He said yellow water comes from sand originating at the Yangtze reservoir while the dark color is from active carbon, which does not harm water quality.
