District taxi rates to rise in Minhang

THE cost of taking a Minhang District taxi is likely to rise next month, following similar increases in Jiading and Fengxian districts last year, the Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday.

The current rates, regardless of the time of the day, are 12 yuan (US$1.95) for the first 3 kilometers — which includes a 1 yuan fuel surcharge — and 2.40 yuan for each kilometer after that.

Those prices are expected to remain unchanged during the daytime, except that distances beyond 10km will be charged at 3.10 yuan per kilometer.

Between 11pm and 5am, however, the flagdown rate is expected to increase to 14 yuan — including the surcharge — while passengers will be charged 2.90 yuan for each kilometer between three and 10, and 3.10 yuan for every kilometer after that.

The increases are necessary to help pay for improvements to the local transport network, officials said, adding that they will still be lower than downtown-based taxis.

An unnamed cabby said he welcomes the increases, while a representative of the industry association said the hikes are likely to attract more drivers to Minhang.

An official from the district government told Shanghai Daily yesterday that the plan to raise taxi rates must first be approved by the standing committee of the county people’s congress, and might be modified before being put into effect.

Minhang taxis are registered with the local authority and are allowed to operate only within the district. At the end of last year there were 880 such vehicles on the streets, and 1,680 drivers.

District taxis, which are recognizable by their orange livery, operate in eight suburban districts and in Chongming County.
