Dog becomes foster mother of 3 tiger cubs
Three newborn Manchurian tiger cubs, which were abandoned by their mother in the Shanghai Wild Animal Park, are now being nursed by a dog, a park official said today.
Born on July 1, the three female cubs were nursed by their mother Wei Wei at first, but hot weather made Wei Wei restless and she abandoned the weakest cub to just feed the other two.
Their keepers monitored the situation and decided to take out all the cubs because "we can't just take one cub away. The mother tiger would get furious and may hurt the other two," said Su Feilong, the park official.
The park found a female dog named Wang Cai from a peasant family near the park. The dog turned out to be a qualified surrogate mother, treating the three cubs as her own.
The three young tigers are in good health and are gaining weight, Su said.
