Dog gone for 76 days returns to his friends
AFTER a two-month journey that covered at least 70 kilometers across parts of Shanghai, A Huang - "Yellow Fur" - finally has a safe place to spend the rest of his dog days.
He escaped from confinement as a factory guard dog and returned to his former adopted home following 76 days of travel. His return surprised those who had given him up for lost. And one canine lover has decided to adopt him and end his life on the street.
A Huang is a mixed breed, who appears to have a lot of German Shepherd blood in him. No one knows his lineage for sure, because no one knows where he came from.
He was abandoned at Brilliant City, a huge residential community in Putuo District, in May 2007 when he was less than a year old. He was able to dodge the dog catchers for most of that time by sleeping in the bushes.
Fleet of foot
Residents who befriended and fed him said they saw the animal being chased and beaten at least five times during that time, either by dog catchers or people who simply disliked him.
During the worst attack, the dog was hit by a thrown shovel, breaking off a front tooth.
Last October, the community's property management company told those feeding A Huang that, because of complaints from the parents of children attending a kindergarten in the complex, the dog would be captured and taken away.
A Huang's human friends convinced the management company to spare the animal, and he was sent to a village factory 71 kilometers away on December 13 to serve as a watchdog. Almost as soon as he arrived, however, he ran away.
His human friends searched for him for days but finally gave up.
To everyone's surprise, A Huang showed up back at the apartment complex on Friday morning, "thin and muddy" and "excited" to see his old companions, said Hu Zhifen, 53, a retired woman and a member of the group who had cared for the dog.
She picked up an application from police yesterday and is in the process of getting a license for A Huang, allowing her to keep him in her home.
"We'd all been missing this lovable dog," Hu said. "We took him for a bath and now he looks shiny."
