Doomsday believer jailed for Jinmao Tower bomb threat
A young man obsessed with the Hollywood disaster film "2012" has been sentenced to two years in prison for setting off a bomb alert on the 88th floor of the Jinmao Tower to warn the public of the Doomsday, the Pudong New Area People's Court said today.
The 23-year-old convict surnamed Yin strapped himself with homemade "explosives" and threatened to blow up the Jinmao Tower at 3:40pm on March 1.
Yin held a knife in one hand and a cell phone in the other as he talked to police, demanding to see the city's top leaders or he would destroy the tower, the court said.
The agitated young man repeatedly said "The earth is going to be destroyed!" but he finally was persuaded by the police to disarm at 5pm.
The court said the Shandong-native was an orphan and grew up with his grandparents. He became a paranoid believer of "2012" after watching the film in the summer of 2010 when he worked in a restaurant in Jiangyin, a city in neighboring Jiangsu Province.
To convince people that the "Doomsday is coming," Yin chose the Jinmao Tower as his target and came to Shanghai last December. He bought two knives and a steel rod from an online store and made a fake bomb himself for the desired terror effect.
"I want more people to know that the earth will be destroyed in 2012 so they still have time to build shelters to save more lives," Yin told the court.
The judges ruled that Yin was convicted of carrying dangerous objects even though the bomb he made could not explode.
