Driver arrested for killing 5 road workers
Chongming County prosecutors yesterday approved the arrest of an 18-year-old driver who killed five road maintenance workers and injured three others during a road accident in October.
The suspect, surnamed Mao, told prosecutors "he was picking up his sunglasses" when he lost control of his car on a Shanghai section of the Chongming-Qidong Expressway and crashed into the road barriers where the car knocked down the workers.
It was too late by the time Mao managed to slam the brakes. A later test showed Mao's car was going at around 100 kilometers per hour when it hit the workers.
Prosecutors said Mao had just acquired a driving license in July, three months before the accident.
