Drug addict jailed for doping old lady in robbery
A drug addict who doped an 83-year-old woman with egg tart mixed with sleeping pills and stole her rings and cash worth more than 6,000 yuan (US$947) was sentenced to 10 years in prison, the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court said today.
Xu Ping, 34, visited the elderly woman surnamed Ge on October 19 last year, claiming she was a neighborhood committee worker and came to see her as part of the committee's welfare activity.
The court heard that Xu checked Ge's identification card, social security card and discovered the woman, who lives alone, put all her valuables in a purse tied at her waist.
Xu visited Ge again the next day and brought her the egg tart laced with sleeping pills. Ge fell asleep after eating it and Xu stole the purse containing a platinum ring, a gold ring and 3,000 yuan in cash.
Xu denied drugging Ge with sleeping pills in the court, claiming Ge fell asleep herself. She also said she experienced hallucinations after taking drugs.
A lower court sentenced Xu to one year and six months in prison but prosecutors demanded a heavier sentence. Xu was finally sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 2,000 yuan, the intermediate court ruled.
