Drug addict who sold same car 3 times sent to jail

A young man who swindled more than 233,000 yuan (US$36,988) by mortgaging his car and retrieving it later using a GPS tracking device was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday by the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court.

Zhang Hehui, 23, was also fined 5,000 yuan, the court said.

Prosecutors said Zhang was a gambler and drug addict. In October 2010, Zhang sold his car to a man surnamed Chu for 120,000 yuan since he was unable to pay his debts.

In January last year, Zhang asked Chu for the car's driving license, saying his car had been stolen and he needed the license to cancel the record at a police station. Using that license, Zhang was able to call a tow truck and bring his sold car back home, the prosecutors said.

To borrow money, Zhang mortgaged the car to a shopkeeper surnamed Sun and promised high returns on his loan. Later Zhang located the car with a GPS device and used a spare key to drive the car home, the court learned.

Using the same trick, Zhang swindled three people out of more than 233,000 yuan and squandered the ill-gotten money.
