Vietnamese 'drug mule' detained at city airport
A VIETNAMESE woman was detained at Pudong International Airport last month after being caught apparently trying to smuggle 1.45 kilograms of cocaine into China, Shanghai Customs said yesterday.
The woman, who was eight months’ pregnant at the time, arrived on January 22 aboard a flight from Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia.
Rather than going to the “foreign passports” channel at immigration, the woman tried to enter the country via the desks for Chinese nationals.
Customs officials became suspicious and told her they wanted to scan her luggage. The X-ray machine revealed two bags of powder hidden in the lining of the bags, which were later found to contain cocaine, Customs said.
The woman is alleged to have admitted to working as a trafficker for a drugs gang.
Officials are investigating.
