Drunk man takes police officer on bonnet ride
A POLICE officer was lucky to suffer only bruises after being taken for an unwanted ride on the hood of a car with a drunk driver at the wheel.
The incident happened yesterday morning when officer Wang Ronghua tried to stop the car on Cao’an Road in Jiading District after he spotted it committing a traffic violation.
Surveillance video showed the car driving the wrong way along Jiayi Road at 7:29am. When the driver spotted Wang at the junction he tried to change lanes to avoid him.
As Wang approached the vehicle it accelerated and the officer leapt on to its bonnet.
“I had no time to turn back,” Wang said.
“I had to jump on the hood to avoid being knocked down.”
The driver jumped a red light and Wang was carried for about 10 meters. The incident ended when the driver rear-ended another car and lost control of the vehicle.
The unnamed man later told police that he was so drunk he didn’t know what he was doing.
Meanwhile, another drunk driver caused a head-on collision with a taxi in the Pudong New Area on Sunday while traveling on the wrong side of the road, police said yesterday.
The incident happened about 4am on Sunday morning on Nanmatou Road.
After colliding with the taxi, the man crashed into two parked cars.
Police said a breath test conducted at the scene showed he was driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The driver, who was identified only as a 28-year-old man who lives in Shanghai, broke his left arm in the incident and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Police said they have spoken to the man since he discharged himself on Monday and will detain him in due course.
