Duo sue over air ticket refund

TWO passengers sued Shanghai Eastern Airlines and Ctrip.com for a full refund of their air tickets valued at 7,340 yuan (US$1,075) at a court hearing today.

The plaintiffs accused the airlines of setting up unfair clauses since it would return only 20 percent of the ticket cost when they wanted to return the tickets.

Pudong New Area People's Court heard the case today without deciding a verdict. The airlines had applied for a closed hearing, citing commercial secrets, but the court turned down the motion.

Hong Liang, a local lawyer, and his friend Li Zhefeng called Ctrip.com on May 9 to book two return tickets between Shanghai and Lhasa, leaving May 15 and returning on May 26.

The plaintiffs called back the same day to ask for a refund because they had to change their schedule due to an accident.

They were told that 80 percent of the ticket face value should be deducted since they were discount tickets on a special flight.
