Eggs with bouncing yolks upset local consumers
SHANGHAI market regulators have begun probing the claims made by some local consumers that they had bought chicken eggs with "rubber-like" yolks.
The Shanghai Industrial and Commercial Administration said today they are now investigating the case.
These eggs look like normal eggs before cooking, but hard-boiled eggs have rubber-textured yolks that can bounce on the floor. After this discovery was reported on a local news channel last night, the public began to worry about their food safety.
Many said they feel upset because they might have been eating such eggs for a long time without noticing.
Rubber-yolk eggs were first discovered elsewhere in China. The Shanghai market watchdog said they had never come across such eggs in their regular sample checks.
Food safety experts said long-time freezing could cause rubber yolks. Chicken feed is also a suspected factor because it contains a large amount of gossypol.
