Eight jailed for dumping waste

EIGHT men who helped a local packaging factory owner illegally dump tons of industrial wastewater and sludge have been jailed.

Three of the men were sentenced to up to two years and three months for polluting the environment, the Qingpu District People’s Court said yesterday.

The five drivers they employed were sentenced to terms ranging from 10 to 14 months.

According to the court, the factory owner, who may face charges, asked one of the culprits, surnamed Qian, for help disposing of waste at her factory in Baoshan District in May. Qian then recruited the other two, surnamed Zhang and Ren, who helped him find drivers.

The eight men dumped nearly 110 tons of wastewater and sludge at the site.

But on May 23, after a dispute arose with the owner of the site, they dumped the waste at another place in Qingpu District, but the drivers were spotted by police and arrested.
