Elevated railway for Jing’an?

JING’AN District is studying the viability of a driverless elevated railway system to connect large shopping areas, officials said yesterday.

It would carry passengers in transparent carriages suspended from an overhead line 14 meters above the ground, its designer China Industrial Design Institute said.

The plan is to create a 2.5-kilometer network with five stops.

Officials said it is too early to say which areas would be covered.

CIDI said the system is based on technology developed by Siemens.

The trains can travel at 50 kilometers per hour and each carriage can hold 75 passengers, CIDI said.

District Officials gave no timescale for the elevated railway plan.
