‘Embezzler’ caught after 14 years on run

A man suspected of embezzling 30 million yuan (US$4.5 million) has been captured by Shanghai police after 14 years on the run, police said yesterday.

The 48-year-old, surnamed Wu, was apprehended in Yantai city in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong, police said yesterday. Wu, a former account manager at a local securities company, disappeared in March with 3.5 million yuan, having lost the other 26.5 million yuan on the stock market, police said.

Tracking Wu down was especially difficult because he severed all contacts when he fled Shanghai with his wife and daughter. However, police caught up with Wu, who changed his name to “Yang Yongxin” in 2004, earlier this month when he was working as a delivery man in Yantai.

Police say he confessed to his crime when confronted with the evidence.
