Embezzler of company pay gets 11 years

A LOCAL man in his 20s has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for making use of his position in a security service company to pay himself 1 million yuan (US$146,400) more in salary than his actual pay, judges said yesterday.

Liu Lihua, 28, was charged with corruption. He told Qingpu District People's Court that he got the idea to embezzle such a large amount because his income couldn't satisfy an expensive lifestyle of brand-name shopping and high-grade bar-hopping.

Liu was hired by the Qingpu branch of a local security service company after graduating from a polytechnic school. After a few years, he was put in charge of writing the pay notices for more than 1,500 employees.

When Liu was making the pay bills one day in October 2005, he got a sudden idea to change his salary. He believed the financial staff wouldn't catch the difference because there were so many employees, the court heard.

Liu found it so easy to pad his pay at first that he became increasingly bolder, eventually embezzling more than 190,000 yuan a month, the court heard.
