End of road for private car plate customers

NEARLY 100 customers who each paid more than 100,000 yuan (US$16,300) for secondhand car plates from a city auto store have learned that they may never see their purchases.

It is alleged that the boss of the store on Zhenbei Road in Putuo District, surnamed Bao, made a quick getaway with the cash without providing the plates.

Police said he is now being questioned and officers are looking to see whether they can bring a civil or criminal case.

A salesman of the auto store, surnamed Zhao, who promised around 60 customers car plates, claims he was also cheated by Bao, saying his colleague claimed that he could get the car plates but then disappeared.

On a surveillance video, Zhao is seen telling customers that it’s a private deal with his boss’s approval and is paid 108,000 yuan by each.

One customer said sales staff offered her a handwritten contract on August 22 and told her that the car plate would be provided within the week when she called them afterward.

Another victim, surnamed Yu, a car plate agent, had bought several secondhand car plates from Zhao’s colleague before and signed another 20 or so contracts with him in recent two months.

“My customers who entrusted me to apply for car plates for them took my car after this incident — as well as my identity card,” Yu said.

Opportunities for motorists to buy plates privately ended in October as their sale is being brought under the city car plate auction from this month.
