E-sports organizer wins payout
A LOCAL company that bought the rights to broadcast an e-sports competition online has been awarded compensation after a rival firm unlawfully aired the same contest via its website.
The defendant, Guangzhou Douyu Network Technology Co, was ordered to pay Shanghai Yaoyu Culture & Media Co 1.1 million yuan (US$172,000) and issue a public apology for the infringement, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The case was China’s first involving an unfair competition dispute relating to the broadcasting of e-sports, it said.
Yaoyu paid about 6 million yuan for the rights to broadcast the Dota 2 Asia competition via its website huomaotv.com. The company also organized the contest, which was held in January, at a cost of about 14 million yuan.
However, once the event got under way, live broadcasts of individual matches also began appearing on douyutv.com, the site operated by the Guangzhou-based company.
Yaoyu contacted Douyu on several occasions asking it to stop broadcasting the games, the court heard.
When no response was forthcoming it resorted to legal action.
