Everything looks peachy as blossom show nears

THE annual Shanghai Peach Blossom Festival gets under way later this month at four sites in the Pudong New Area.

People hoping to see the annual blooms can take a free shuttle bus from outside Metro Line 16’s Huinan, Xinchang and Dishuihu Lake stations. These will run to the sites in the towns of Huinan, Datuan, Xinchang and Laogang, which between them have 3,300 hectares of peach trees.

The Nanhui Peach Blossom Village in Huinan, which boasts about 20 varieties of peach blossom, is likely to be the most popular, especially as it now also has a musical fountain.

In Chinese culture, peach blossoms signify longevity, prosperity and luck in love, and admiring them is a popular family outing in springtime.

A number of other activities, including folk performances, lantern shows, matchmaking and cycling events, and a photo competition will also be held during the festival, which will end in mid-April.

With large numbers of people expected to travel to the four sites, authorities said they will impose strict limits on visitor numbers.

At the Nanhui blossom village, there will be a daily ceiling of 30,000 people, with no more than 19,000 allowed in at one time, said Ma Xuejie, deputy director of the Pudong commerce commission.

If a particular area is overly popular, police and volunteers will direct visitors to alternative sites, he said.

People are advised to visit the sites in the afternoon, after the worst of the crowds have dispersed, he said.

The city’s 25th peach blossom festival is expected to start between March 25 and 28, with the best time for viewing likely to be between April 4 and 10.
