Ex-Party official accused of corruption
THE former deputy Party Secretary of Meilong Town, Minhang District has been arrested for alleged corruption and bribe taking, the district prosecutors' office said yesterday.
Prosecutors said Wu Shundi, 60, embezzled more than 3 million yuan (US$450,450) in public assets and accepted millions of yuan in bribes.
The case is still under investigation and prosecutors have not yet placed a figure on the alleged bribes.
Wu was a city-level model worker and his other titles included Party Secretary of Longxing Village of the town, board chairman and general manager of Shanghai Longxing (Group) Co Ltd, a village-owned company, and Shanghai Dianju Industrial Co Ltd, Wu's private company.
Prosecutors began to receive complaints from villagers about Wu's alleged embezzlement at the end of 2007. After two years of investigation, prosecutors claimed that Wu hid more than 3 million yuan worth public assets when the village-owned company Longxing was formed in 2003.
When Longxing transferred one hectare of village-owned land in 2005, Wu allegedly accepted millions of yuan in bribes from a real estate developer.
"Wu owned several companies himself. He spent part of the money on company operations and used the rest for personal expenses," said Jin Zhijun, lead prosecutor on the case.
