Ex-Party secretary gets life in multimillion corruption case
THE former Party secretary of the city's Changzheng Town committee was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday for three corruption offences, which involved embezzlement, graft and taking bribes.
The amount he managed to gather over several years came to about 108 million yuan (US$16.25 million).
The Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People's Court also ordered the confiscation of 1 million yuan in personal assets from Wang Miaoxing.
The court ruled that Wang, who was board chairman of Shanghai Xinchangzheng Group before he was arrested, grafted 97 million yuan, accepted 6.3 million yuan in bribes and finally embezzled 5 million yuan.
Wang was appointed director of the Changzheng Town committee in Putuo District in 1998 and was promoted to Party secretary of the town government in 2001.
During this period, he was also Party secretary and board chairman of Shanghai Xinchangzheng Group, a collective company owned by the town which was in various activities including property development.
Wang had left his post as Party secretary by October 2005, when the group became a private company. He remained on the board as chairman of the company.
Before the company changed from a town-owned one to a privately-owned one, Wang took advantage of his position as the town's Party secretary to transfer 97 million yuan in company capital to a secret account in 2005.
"Wang's behavior was deliberate and directly caused the town government to lose a huge sum of money," the verdict stated.
From 1997 to 2006, Wang accepted 6.3 million yuan in bribes from three companies that sought to develop real estate projects in the town.
Wang also embezzled 5 million yuan from the company from 2006 to 2007. He took 1.78 million yuan of the embezzled money for himself and used the rest to repay various debts.
