Ex-convict nearly bites policeman’s thumb off

A CONVICTED drug dealer was detained after he nearly bit off a policeman’s thumb when the officer tried to check whether the man had drugs in his mouth, Jing’an District officers said yesterday.

Police went to check a suspicious car with two people in it on Kangding Road on September 10. The man in the backseat refused to speak and looked like he was trying to conceal something in his mouth.

Police checked his ID in their database and found the man had been convicted of selling and dealing drugs.

An officer surnamed Zhang said he suspected the man was trying to conceal packets of drugs in his mouth. The man resisted when he was asked to open his mouth. Once the officers had him under control he tried to swallow the packets.

Zhang then attempted to take the packets out of his mouth and the man bit his thumb extremely hard.

“His thumb has a hole in it now and is badly swollen,” a police officer told Shanghai Daily. “The nail was almost completely smashed and a doctor said it will take a long time to heal.”

Police said they were awaiting test results to find out what the packets contained.
